Daily intelligence for the people who grow, make, move, buy & sell food & beverages

Welcome back,

A meat company is being taken to court over what it won't say. A packaging regulation lands in sixteen days with no grace period and the liability sitting on importers. Five member states just killed a sanctions measure because Europe cannot replace the fish.

Three stories, one pattern: the exposure keeps moving downstream. Not to the producer, not to the supplier — to whoever is buying.

In today's edition:

JBS faces a Dutch court challenge over its $6bn expansion — the first time this legal template has been pointed at protein rather than oil and gas
Farm diesel costs jumped $1.4bn in a single planting season, and growers have nowhere to pass it
The EU dropped Russian seafood from its 21st sanctions package — but the regulation that actually bites expires in December
PPWR applies in 16 days, and if you import into the EU the compliance obligation is probably yours
The Red Sea still won't settle, and neither routing is getting cheaper

Plus: soybeans at contract highs, the smallest US calf crop since 1941, and Brent's round trip through $100.

Let's dive in!

FEATURED STORY

JBS Faces Dutch Court Challenge Over $6bn Expansion

Greenpeace wants disclosure. The template until now has been oil-and-gas only.

JBS moved its headquarters to the Netherlands to unlock a New York listing. It also moved into Dutch duty-of-care law. Greenpeace Netherlands has now petitioned a Dutch court to force disclosure on the company's $6bn expansion — roughly half of it earmarked for a $2.5bn, six-plant build-out in Nigeria. This is groundwork for litigation, not the litigation itself. For protein buyers, the exposure being tested is group-level disclosure quality, not conditions at one plant.

QUICK BITES

Commodities

Soybeans — Aug beans $12.48/bu, up 10½¢. November set fresh contract highs overnight at $12.55 before easing. Chinese buying is the backbone of this market; Trump–Xi meeting confirmed for 24 September, with traders expecting purchases to ramp into it. Dry start to August is adding weather premium.

Corn — Sep corn $4.64¼/bu, up ¼¢; Dec $4.87½. December spiked to $4.92 overnight Friday, its highest since 21 May. Hot, dry conditions across the western and northern Corn Belt are stressing the crop; eastern belt cooler with scattered rain.

Wheat — Sep Chicago $6.78/bu, down 18¼¢; KC $7.45¼, Minneapolis $7.14¼. Position liquidation drove Friday's double-digit losses, but the underlying story is bullish: European crop estimates falling on heat, and Russia sidelined from near-term export business.

Live Cattle — Aug $227.07/cwt, up $1.67. Recovering after a brutal stretch — 15 consecutive lower closes and roughly $20 off contract highs. Cash traded $230–232 live, $365 dressed, mainly $8 lower on the week. Record beef imports are the proximate drag.

Feeder Cattle — Aug $345.32/cwt, up $1.55. USDA's 1 July Cattle report landed Friday: herd at 94.2m head, up from 94.0m — the first year-on-year increase in a July count since 2018. Beef replacement heifers up 3%. But the beef cow herd is still shrinking and the 2026 calf crop of 32.5m head is down 2%, the smallest since 1941. Bottom reached; rebuild not started.

Lean Hogs — Aug $102.85/cwt, up 70¢. Modest recovery off recent lows.

Class III Milk — Aug $17.21/cwt, down 41¢ on Friday, softening from mid-month levels.

Crude Oil — Brent around $96.80, down nearly 4% Friday but up roughly 10% on the week; WTI Sep settled $89.31, down $2.88. Brent crossed $100 midweek after Houthi strikes on two Saudi tankers. Friday's pullback came on reports Pakistan and China are trying to revive US–Iran talks. Thirteen consecutive nights of US strikes on Iran.

Also on the board: Dec cotton 79.98¢ (−123 pts); Sep rice $13.97½ (−15½¢); Aug soymeal $331.30 (+$1.40); Aug soyoil 74.33¢ (−126 pts).

AGRICULTURE & ENERGY INDUSTRY

Farm Diesel Costs Jump $1.4bn in One Planting Season

A 63% year-on-year increase, landing in the weeks when a tractor can't afford to sit idle.

US growers spent roughly $1.41 billion more on diesel planting the 2026 crop than they did in 2025. Illinois absorbed +$163m, Iowa +$151m; Florida saw the steepest percentage jump at +90.6%. On-farm, the number that bites is smaller: $1,538 more to refill a typical 750-gallon bulk tank. The aggregate excludes harvest, irrigation, drying and haulage — so the real energy burden on this crop is larger than the headline. Growers can't pass it forward. Freight surcharges can.

SEAFOOD INDUSTRY

EU Drops Russian Seafood From 21st Sanctions Package

Six weeks from a full cod ban to nothing at all.

The EU adopted its 21st Russia package on 22 July with every fisheries measure stripped out. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal held the line. The dependency numbers explain why: around 94% of EU whitefish is imported, and Russian-origin fish accounted for an estimated 34% of total supply — understated, since over 95% of Chinese-processed pollock arriving in the bloc is Russian. But Russian whitefish still isn't entering duty-free, and the regulation that governs that expires on 31 December.

PACKAGING INDUSTRY

PPWR Applies in 16 Days. There Is No Grace Period.

Packaging trends stop being marketing on 12 August and start being law.

The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation becomes directly binding across all 27 member states on 12 August 2026 — no national transposition, no exemption for stock in production. The liability point catches people out: if you import packaged goods into the EU, you generally carry the compliance obligation yourself, and a supplier declaration isn't a defence. August is the floor. The commercial reset is recyclability grading in 2030, and redesigns run on 12–24 month lead times.

CONTAINER SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Red Sea Still Unpredictable, and Buyers Are Paying For It

One test service is not a network shift.

Suez handled roughly 80 container ships a week before the crisis. In January it was around 26. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd tried a return in February and reversed within weeks; a second attempt launched on 6 July with a single service. A ceasefire has held since mid-June — and a vessel was attacked near Al Hudaydah on 5 July. Both things are true, which is the whole problem. Meanwhile SCA surcharges rose on 15 July, so neither routing is getting cheaper.

CONCLUSION

Three dates worth putting in the diary before you close this tab.

12 August — PPWR applies, no grace period.
24 September — Trump and Xi meet, and the soybean market finds out whether it was right.
31 December — the EU regulation excluding Russian whitefish from tariff quotas expires, and the 2027–29 round is the one that actually moves landed cost.

None of them are weather events. All three will do more to your input costs this year than the forecast will.

See you tomorrow.
